My Story
Jonny Incipido, legally referred to as, Jonathan Roberts (any pronouns), was born in Cebu, Philippines. He was adopted at an early age and moved to the United States, where he grew up in both the Twin Cities and the North Shore of Minnesota. In his early music education, he was Classically trained in the public school system starting with the viola. Within that time, he was self taught on the cello leading up to his senior year, all while exploring his second talent, dance, within the privacy of his home. Jonny would continue his educational, musical, and dance growth at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities- College of Liberal Arts- School of Music, where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts with an Applied Emphasis in music performing on the cello and viola. He studied under Tanya Remenikova for cello and Korey Konkol for viola. Alongside his studies, he student organized, workshop hosted, and lead the dance teams of the student group, the Philippine Student Association of Minnesota. He has pursued a Master of Music in Technology and Applied Composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Marco d' Ambrosio. It was here he built a strong foundation in his skills surrounding composition for media, composition for the concert space, mixing, and recording.
Artist and Liberationist
Jonny is deeply committed to liberationist work, with a focus on promoting freedom and justice for Black, Indigenous, and Queer communities. He actively engages in education, community organizing, frontline protesting, and creating impactful art that amplifies important messages. As an educator, Jonny is passionate about hosting workshops that provide spaces for learning, dialogue, and critical discourse within his community. He believes that education and joy can intersect to foster community growth and empowerment.
Jonny also feels a strong calling to be part of collectives that stand up against injustices and systemic violence through participation in front lines work and other modes of disrupting oppressive systems to effect meaningful change. And it is through striking a balance between creating spaces for dialogue and joy with the acts of system disruption that he finds a sustainable path towards self-preservation while working towards a more just society for all things on this earth.
As an artist, Jonny sees it as his duty, right, and passion to create work that offers a critical analysis, profound statements, and reflections of the environment. His art nurtures a deeper understanding of the human experience, amplifies marginalized voices, and fosters collective action for change. His dedication to liberation, education, community building, and artistic expression fuels his desire to make a positive impact on the world.
